LIVELY INTERNET THEORY - April 2025

Hello! Welcome back to LIVELY INTERNET THEORY. This is a bit of a continuation of one of my first posts on here, so this will be dedicated to showing off all the amazing ways you can waste your time on the internet. Put seriously: I want to compile all the sweet stuff people make and share online! In terms taken from other parts of the web, you may even consider this my "media thread" or my media log.

For my more static archive-type page of most of my favorite internet things, check out the Hoarde.

Without further ado, here's why the internet's not dead!

Doomsday, Darling!

A lot of the items in this issue of LIVELY INTERNET THEORY are actually graciously brought to you by my algorithms...?! Many of us have a hatred for the idea that we're being monitored online so advertisers can find our weak points at which to strike, but uh... I have to admit that I've found some real stars from just scrolling along.

And not mindless garbage from said scrolling! True, passionate art! Along these lines, check out Canadian band "Doomsday, Darling!"

I adore the sounds of their songs. They only have a few, though I hope they keep it going. The song "Far Away From Here" is clearly so heartfelt and the way that it ends is so creative. It reminds me of the hundreds of cross-state drives I've made, surfing foreign radio stations, hearing them fade in and out as you go out of range of them. Magnificent!

PC-98 Treats

At the intersection of computer freaks and weeaboos lies the English-speaking PC-98 fanbase. Just speaking off the cuff, I feel like it's the Japanese computer system that has the most USA/English-speaking fans that are dedicated to making its content more well known and accessible over here. Poor FM Towns.

I mention this because there's waaaayyy too much cool stuff from the PC-98 that you can enjoy on YOUR home computer, if you're willing to put in a few minutes of emulation elbow grease. Don't tell the feds you know me, if they ask.

First off, please be aware of the treasure trove over at the "baba-jpc" site, also on neocities! Take a deep breath and read this: there is a Metroidvania game based off of Dante's Divine Comedy. What?????????????????????????????? I don't have enough question marks to indicate how shocked I was to learn of this too! It was stuck in Japan, but our friend has made an English translation for this! If you're dying to play it though, know that this only links to his site with some info about the translation and a walkthrough... for some reason not even the translation patch is available to download anymore, so I'm gonna give you homework and say you'll have to find it online yourself if you wanna play it ;) Also check out this short animated VN! I am NOT saying that name, but it's probably one of the most tame pieces of software on the PC-98, lol.

Say you don't wanna run any of the games or anything like that, though. First of all, what's wrong with you? Seeing this stuff run is like crack to me. I'm glad I'm this easy to please, that way I don't have to waste money on hard drugs or anything, I've heard they're expensive. Second though, there are great explainer and fan sites about PC-98 stuff - the crown jewel being the PC-98 beginner's FAQ over at Gang Fight. Now THAT is a marvel of web design. (Their whole site is awesome, take a look around.) People are still hackin' away at providing more and more PC-98 info, so there are other up and coming sites like this one.

Click here to read this cool post too!

Knowing that this is how Touhou all started out explains a lot about the series. (Click the image to read this cool post about it too!)

If that doesn't have you convinced, just know that the PC-98 is home of the mascots of the Puyo Puyo and Touhou series... you wanna check out these ancient relics, right?! Read the FAQ I linked above and try out some of this stuff for yourself and gain an appreciation for computing and gaming history.

Blog Post Bonanza

RAPID FIRE ARTICLE/BLOG/WEBSITE SECTION TIME GO GO GO GO GO GO

OLD VCR is a gem of a website hosted by one of the pillars of the classic Mac community. There are articles about back porting modern software to older Apple OSes, his own projects, retrospectives and best of all, pictures of ridiculously large Apple server computers. This is the kind of website you could get stuck on for hours. Might be speaking from experience.

oldvcr.blogspot.com

You have no right to be that large bro what is this hahaha

ROCKMAN CORNER has made an awesome write-up about the ill-fated Mega Man X9.

READ ONLY MEMO created a lovely dive into the world of Linda Cubed, a PS1 game that was largely unknown to English-speaking JRPG fans, until now! Read about the game and its translation project here! (This whole website is awesome too!)

And lastly, BRAWLER'S WORLD continues to be a delight to the senses. View it on a desktop/laptop for the full Flash website nostalgia experience, imo.

MROI and Funi Raccoon Game

There are two different ends on the trippiness spectrum: one tastes like sugar and the other smells like decay. (Both could be in a good OR bad way! Probably.) Here are two games to satisfy your cravings for indie games on both of these fronts.

MROI came from a recent LSDJAM that also brought us Aggie's Art Gallery from last month's issue. A very well crafted experience.

And on the other hand, there's funi raccoon game. It boldly asks the question, "what if " ? Just go play it :) some fun jumpin and throwin action with a great selection of the finest PNGs and WAVs.

That's it for this month of LIVELY INTERNET THEORY. See you next month!
