THE OLDE HOARDE
Welcome to the OLDE HOARDE. Below is a collection of some of the most interesting, historically notable or fun websites still accessible over HTTP. These sites are super fun to browse on an old computer or operating system without any additional modifications or software - if you go this route, just hook up an ethernet cable to that old beast and hop on some of these websites.
NOTE: a lot of these websites are run by all sorts of different people, so I offer these to you with no necessary endorsements, warranty or refunds available. Some sites are actually pretty sizable and have all sorts of content, the bulk of which I have not seen. On that note, if sites contain anything questionable or have user-generated content I can't vouch for, they will have an asterisk * next to them. Browse at your own risk!
Personal Sites
The websites of individuals were the bread and butter of a lot of the early internet. Here are some interesting sites still run by individuals, hosting anything from blogs to images and anything in between.
- JOJO2K.COM BAAAABYYYYYYYY
- ericexperiment.com - Eric's website. You know Eric, right? Everyone knows Eric. This is his website. Has lots of things from music to writing to computing resources.
- floodgap.com - a doctor (yes, an actual doctor) with a passion for retro computing. Just dig through this guy's website, he's into a loooooottt of different things. All terribly interesting, of course!
- Some *.blogspot.com sites - somehow, maybe depending on your browser, when your computer feels like it, some *.blogspot.com sites work on your old computers. Maybe it's just a Classilla thing on OS 9.
- jcs.org - the site of a very talented programmer man. Even has custom classic Mac software!
- nobbyville.com* - you ever think that you're prepared for something, and then the thing actually happens and you realize you weren't prepared? That's what this website is.
- richfiles.solarbotics.net - it appears to be a miracle that this site is still online. We're all off better that it is, though! (You can look up the other sites on this "solarbotics" hoster, but lots of them are quite dead.)
- uguu.org - reviews, programs and more. Fun site!
Technology
Websites especially geared towards technology.
- ucanet.net* - ProtoWeb on steroids. Ucanet has their own DNS setup so that people can host their own websites, but they also host ProtoWeb site restorations so that you can browse anything from the retro Weather Channel site all the way down to people's own sites still running today. They have a quick proxy route so that you can connect to their sites via your browser proxy settings, or you can have it be your system's DNS.
- oldversion.com* - great software archive site, good if you need to find Windows software for Windows 95 - Windows 7 especially.
- macintoshgarden.org* - THE Macintosh software archive. Especially geared towards roughly OS X 10.4 and below.
- macos9lives.com - fun and lovely resource for all things Mac OS 9. Has HTTP-accessible forums too, great hangout for Mac dorks.
- system7lives.com - good Apple System 7 resources - includes forums, some software, drivers, wallpapers and even a super basic weather checker.
- theoldnet.com - a nice directory for things relating to retro computing online. Not everything that it links to is HTTP-compatible though.
- frogfind.com - a search engine that even translates search results down to web pages more suitable for retro computers.
- google.com - uh... google.com still serves over HTTP. Huh. (You probably won't get very far on it though - it'll quickly ask you to upgrade browsers. Whatever Google.)
- oldavista.com* - fun site indexing archived sites and some retro things. Lots of their links are Internet Archive links though. If you use their search engine, you can find things that still work on your old machines thanks to theoldnet.
- wiby.org* - a search engine specializing in indexing lighter-weight websites. Has tons more HTTP-compatible sites!
- webarchive.me/geocities* - while other places like theoldnet or protoweb provide "prettier" geocities mirrors, this is one you can browse on an older machine with no additional setup or network tinkering. Happy spelunking.
Video Games
What is a video game
- starmen.net - that's right, the world's most faithful Mother/Earthbound fansite is largely accessible on your old machines. I can confirm their Mother 1 walkthrough can help you finish Mother 1 on your old Mac hahaha
- winbrick.de - you remember world-renowned developers Soft & Fun, right? No? ARE YOU EVEN A REAL GAMER THEN???
- quake.medwayhosting.com - old UK Quake II community, it seems. Somebody, please hop on here and tell me if anyone is online. (Or, look at their collection of player models haha)
- zharth.net - STILL ONLINE FF6 FAN PAGE LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
- An article about FF7 - this is an article about FF7.
- ff7citadel.com - against all odds, this classic FF7 fan site is still online.
